TANKA is ...
TANKA is short, lyrical poetry which inherited the characteristics
of Japanese ancient literature as well as Haiku for more than
1,300 years. It was only since the Meiji Era or the 19th century
that people began to call it TANKA to clearly distinguish it
from classical WAKA poetry. Why is this ancient art form of
poetry still attracting many people and always reviving itself
with renewed vocabularies and phonemes of newer generations?
Like western poems, TANKA is composed of carefully selected
words. The great difference is that TANKA should be arranged
in 31 syllables with a structure of 5,7,5,7 and 7 syllable-lines.
This form has been considered to best naturally suit the breathing
rhythms of the Japanese people, and express the gamut of feeling
and the delicate shades of meaning. This simple construction
unbelievably contains the realm of the poets and suggests feelings
beyond the words. Now, come and join us to experience the realm
of TANKA poetry. Just make a poem of 31 syllables in 5-7-5-7-7
lines. You will surely ask someone for his or her impressions
and comments of your work, and soon find the joy of appreciating
poems of others. Do comment on their works, and listen carefully
to their opinions on your pieces. This is the best way to understand
the depth of TANKA poetry. |
